| Message from the MMA |
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the May 2008 edition of the Mobile Marketing Association’s (MMA) Mobile Marketing Messenger.
As the MMA ‘goes global’, we are thrilled that we are close to
announcing the establishment of the LATAM Board of Directors. A large
number of companies and individuals put their names forward in the
election – and we received incredible participation and results. It is
the first time, for a new region launch, that we have had such
incredible participation. If you are interested in participating in our
initiatives in any region, please do not hesitate to contact us.
For MMA members in the United States, in March, the MMA announced that
its Women in Wireless committee has partnered with The Wireless
Foundation’s Wireless AMBER Alerts program. Nearly 800,000 children go
missing in the US alone each year. Over the past ten years, the AMBER
Alerts program has been credited with returning over 350 children
safely. With the advent of the mobile alerts program in May 2006, the
ability to reach the public on a mass scale quickly became possible.
This is an opportunity for those in the wireless industry to use
technology and the power of mobile to make a genuine difference in
their community and save a child’s life. We encourage you, your friends
and colleagues to sign up for this important program by texting the
word “AMBER” followed by a space and your 5-digit US ZIP Code to 26237
or by going to www.wirelessamberalerts.org.
June will be a busy news month for the MMA – and we expect to make a
number of announcements. Watch our newsletter and our website for more
information.
Our flagship event, the New York Mobile Marketing Forum will be held on
June 10th and 11th at the Times Square Marriott Marquis. If you are
interested in attending or sponsoring this event please click here to find out more.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Regards,
Mobile Marketing Association

public service that allows wireless subscribers to opt in to receive
Wireless AMBER Alerts as text messages on their mobile phones.
Subscribers can opt in to the program in two ways:
- Most wireless subscribers can send the word “AMBER” followed by a space and their 5-digit ZIP Code to 26237.

Each
month the Global Research, Publications & Statistics section will
aim to feature studies representing the global mobile community.
M-Commerce Data from Nielsen Mobile

On June 12, Nielsen Mobile will present findings from a Q1 2008
analysis of the m-commerce opportunity at the Internet Retailer 2008
Conference & Exhibition. Nic Covey, director of insights at Nielsen
Mobile, gave us a preview of that presentation which shows that one in
five US mobile users is interested in using text messages to purchase
goods or services over their phone. Men are more likely than women to
be interested in this service and mobile users under the age of 35 are
more likely to be interested in the service than their older
counterparts. More information on these data and other mobile media and
advertising measurement services is available from Nielsen by
contacting Nic Covey at nicholas.covey@nielsen.com.

The
popularity of mobile users accessing social networking sites or blogs
via their mobile handset is growing steadily. Over the last year,
France and the UK have seen growth rates of 162 percent and 178 percent
respectively. While these seem like large developments, growth is
derived from a small starting base. For example, the UK has the largest
amount of users among all the markets M:Metrics measures, but it's
still only 4.9 percent of the mobile population accessing a social
networking site once or more in a month. Over fifty percent of mobile
subscribers who access a networking site or blog will browse the site
for content, and in the US as many as one third of users will post
written content.

India: Ripe for Mobile Advertising
By Sandy Agarwal, Managing Director, Nokia Interactive Advertising & MMA Board Member, APAC
India has the fastest growing middle class economy in the world, the
fastest rate of adoption of mobile, and the highest interactive
advertising growth rate, with interactive advertising spend projected
to quadruple over the next four years. These factors have combined to
make mobile advertising a perfect fit in the Indian market place, and
advertisers are taking notice.
Streamlining
and Safeguarding the Relationship of Content Providers and Mobile
Operators through Campaign Management and Analytics
Evanna Kearins, Director of Marketing, Valista
Operators need to ensure that off-deck services are legitimate,
appropriate and consistent with their brand. Content providers also
have a responsibility to ensure that their content and marketing
efforts are aligned with the operators’ policies to safeguard and
strengthen partner relations. Operators can do this by evaluating and
approving the content providers’ campaigns and the campaign lifecycle,
including the business rules associated with age restricted content and
services.
