Message from the MMA

MMADear Readers,

Welcome to the February 2008 edition of the Mobile Marketing Association’s (MMA) Mobile Marketing Messenger.

Spring is always a time of change and growth – and the same is true within the Mobile Marketing Association.  We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead!  We recently held elections in North America and Asia Pacific and will be announcing new Boards as well as new Chair people in the coming weeks.  We will also be holding Board elections in EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) as well as Latin America so we look forward to working with them to bring the MMA into the coming year.  We thank all of our current, new and prospective Board members for their support and encouragement in 2007.  The MMA experienced phenomenal growth which could not have been managed without the support of our Board members and our membership.

On March 27, the MMA will launch the Latin America chapter in São Paulo.  We are excited about the launch of our new chapter and welcome current and prospective MMA members to participate in this launch event.  For more details, please visit the MMA Events Calendar at www.mmaglobal.com.

The MMA continues to build out our global event series – and will offer the following events in the 2008 calendar:

  • Mobile Marketing Forum LATAM, São Paulo, March 26
  • MMA LATAM Chapter Launch, São Paulo, March 27
  • Mobile Marketing Forum EMEA, London, April 15 & 16
  • Mobile Marketing Forum NA East, New York, June 10 & 11

The Mobile Marketing Forum series in North America, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Latin America are now produced in partnership with Informa Telecoms & Media.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Regards,

Mobile Marketing Association

Laura Marriott

Just because it’s mainstream, it doesn’t mean it’s boring.
An agency perspective on the US mobile marketing industry
By Laura Marriott, President, Mobile Marketing Association

Early in the New Year, it is time to assess the state of the industry and get the industry leaders commentaries on what the year holds. For this column, I touched base with a few of the leaders in the agency space to get their take on where we are headed with mobile marketing in 2008. My original intent for this column was to compare a person’s time in mobile to dog years -- as time either stands still or we put on more years in the short period of time that we have been immersed. All those that I spoke with feel they are 7 - 18 in dog years. Don’t know about you readers, but some days, maybe those after walking the floors of Mobile World Congress, I feel much older.

Academic Review: Mobile Marketing Messaging via SMS Versus SMTP/Email Channels
By Michael Becker, EVP Business Development, iLoop Mobile, Inc.

Over the last few years, marketers have shown an ever increasing interest in reaching out to and communicating with their customers and prospects via the mobile channel, i.e. employing mobile marketing within their marketing mix.  Mobile marketing initiatives include everything from simple text messaging alerts (weather, sports, news, horoscopes, etc.) to intelligent real-time interactive sessions between the marketer (brand) and its customers via text messaging, multimedia messaging, Bluetooth alerts, location aware services, voice/IVR, the mobile internet, device resident portals, and much more.  Mobile marketing initiatives are discovered by consumers either through Mobile (Carrier On Device Portal, Mobile Internet Sites, etc.) or Mobile Enhanced Traditional Media channels (TV, Radio, Print, In Venue Screen, IVR, etc.). The most common element of any mobile marketing initiative today is text messaging, which is also referred to as SMS; however, after talking with many marketers it is clear that there is some confusion around text messaging and an alternative messaging method--specifically SMTP/Email.  This article compares the practice of messaging via the SMTP/Email and SMS channels and highlights which channel should be used for commercial mobile marketing traffic and why.
